Oman is officially the Sultanate of Oman. It is an Arab country on the southeastern coast of the Arabian Peninsula in Western Asia. Its official religion is Islam. The coast is formed by the Arabian Sea on the southeast and the Gulf of Oman on the northeast. The Omani Sultanate was a powerful empire in the late 17th century, vying with Portugal and the UK for influence in the Persian Gulf and Indian Ocean. At its peak in the 19th century, Omani influence or control extended across the Strait of Hormuz to modern-day Iran and Pakistan, and as far south as Zanzibar. Muscat is the capital and most populated city in Oman. It was the principal trading port of the Persian Gulf region, and Indian Ocean. Other popular cities in Oman are Sohar, Seeb, Salalah, Sur, Nizwa, Bashar, Alhambra, and the region of Dhofar.
